  •  But Iowa won't derail Mittens (2+ / 0-)

Iowa doesn't mean the same thing to gopers in this era as it does to Democrats.  The smartest move for Mitt is to run a national campaign as the 'inevitable' nominee, running against Obama and mostly ignoring his goper competitors.  It's the campaign that Hillary wanted to run in 07 but wasn't able to.  She was drawn into Iowa because she had to cut Obama off before he could get momentum and give people the idea that he actually had a shot.  Iowa did that for him.  There aren't any gopers who it could do that for this year.  And that's only made more clear if Romney doesn't even contest it.  I'd say his campaign has definitely figured this out.  Unfortunately, I don't see them making any real blunders at this point.

There may be one exception to that.  If Newt wins in Iowa, I think you have a whole new ballgame.

      •  I just don't see it (0+ / 0-)

Unless he's been intentionally hanging back for the right moment to make a run, Newt hasn't even looked like he wants the nomination.  And he's got nothing on the ground here in Iowa in terms of organization that could pull off a caucus win.

I think the only possible upset would have to come from someone not even in the race at this point.  All the candidates are so flaccid that it could be possible for a real flashy candidate to pull the late entry upset but I don't know who that is.  It could just be another asshole who wants to sell books and spots an easy opportunity for publicity and excitement.  I really wish someone would show up and make things uncomfortable for Mitt.

        •  It could be Jeb Bush (1+ / 0-)

in any other year.  Unfortunately for Jeb, it's just been too soon after his brother left office at 30% approval.  We haven't seen the last of Jeb.  Wait until 2016.

although it's possible that W finally poisoned the well for that whole clan.  If I was a Democratic strategist I would continue to run against Bush every year until the GOP is forced to actually diverge from the insane and stupid policies that he pursued.  Which they haven't.  Make them own it.

I believe you're right that Jeb will want to take a shot if the goat entrails look promising in 2015.  But as a Democrat, I think you can always win by hanging W around their necks.  This would be too easy with Jeb.  It's why I would have welcomed Perry as the nominee this year.

Even the GOP disses W at this point.  They should be made to pay for that until they actually stop BEING W.

      •  Nobody likes Newt (0+ / 0-)

and Newt has a wonderful propensity for saying things that remind people of that fact. Even Republicans don't like him, which is why he's been trailing since the start. McCain was a charismatic guy years ago...Newt never was.

      •  Newt won't win Iowa (0+ / 0-)

If Romney doesn't win there, a fire-breather will.  Maybe Perry or Bachman.  Then Romney will masacre them in NH.  I'm still of the opinion that Romney might win Iowa, and won't finish worse than second.
