So I suggest you don't hold your breath. It's like he said; it's none of his business.  One thing that drives me nuts about many liberals is how "tolerance" is no longer enough, and anything less than full endorsement on any issue is something to complain about.

sex jokes aside.  (hehehheh, position.)  Clint Eastwood's comments are great!  They are also possibly prone to being misinterpreted, not because anybody has to be in their soul of souls happy with marriage equality (though it's truthfully bigotry otherwise), but because it could be used as a reason to say "back of the bus."  After all, if Clint Eastwood doesn't care if you get married (good!), on some level he might also not care if you have the right to get married (bad!).  He's channeling his annoyance with the whole damn issue in the proper direction, and that's great!  But on a certain level, "I don't care" is not the right response.  I care very much that some of my gay friends in Pennsylvania can get married because they're my friends, and it'll make them happy.  I'm not criticizing Eastwood in any way, but getting out of the way is only the beginning of the duty of the majority here.  He went the next step by calling all the objections bullshit, but there's a third step which is that marriage equality is a moral imperative he didn't make.

gay marriage supporters to embrace the "grumpy old man" quasi-libertarian manner in which Eastwood frames the issue.  Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.  After all, what's easier than convincing American's to say "ah, who gives a fuck"?

but I'm not taking the who gives a fuck attitude too far, is all.  As a sex issue, I get it, but I see it as a legal issue.

Having seen Grand Torino, Clint knows he hasn't finished his story arc.

Back in the day when I was an angry teenager full of righteous apathy I had quite a bit of success challenging my peers with this sort of attitude. The conversations invariably went something like this:
Who gives a shit if some fags want to marry each other, they want to do their thing, what the fuck should I care?
But... but... the bible... the sanctity of marriage!
The what?! Your mom is on her third husband and she still blew me last night. Don't give me that dumb shit you fucking retard, you should be thanking every homo you meet for giving you one more chance to find a girl desperate enough to fuck you.

Kids responded well to these sorts of crass conversations, it turned their homophobia around on them in a way that made it a problem they had to justify without feeling morally judged by the confrontation.

          •  Please don't use the word "fags" casually (0+ / 0-)

like that on this blog. It isn't the neutrally profane as fuck or shit, it's loaded with bigotry and not fun, and not ok.

I presume you didn't mean it that way. Because otherwise, your support seems sincere, and is welcome and appreciated. But I am not alone on this blog in finding that word as unacceptable as other bigoted words that can get a user banned. Thank you.

    •  tolerance is a two edged sword (0+ / 0-)

Tolerance of difference is great, except when it's tolerance of institutional and/or legal bigotry.

Denying people the right to marry based upon sexual orientation is bigotry. I'm definitely intolerant of that.
