    financial, utilities, tele-communications, and oil, gas & pipelines

    used to be public utilities.  Nationalized, one might even say.  For the most part, breaking up Ma Bell did truly bring the innovation and competition that was promised by the advocates of unfettered enterprise, though reliable basic service to unprofitable remote areas has been tough to sustain under that model.

    But gas and electric?  Where is the innovation there?  Where is the radical transformation?  Where is my ability to buy power from a variety of companies according to their distinctive menu of green sources and variable pricing plans?  Hmmmm?  

    We lost most of the control and as far as I can see have gained none of the supposed benefits.  Unregulated monopolies (or regulated so lightly as to be immaterial) strikes me as a crappy deal.   I say, put gas and electric back under government control and ENFORCE aggressive sustainability targets.  They had their chance.
