blackness? Who declares that we all need to act the same? Or that one person's "Yo!" is another's "Nigger!"? It seems to me those rules are made, mostly, by whites for the protection of, mostly, whites. "Sanitized for your protection" shouldn't be a requirement for engagement on social and political issues.

Yes, courtesy and respect matter. It's the one area I think the diarist trods on toes. But the same can be said of those of us who are trying force our perceived "norms" and rules on him for racial issues. So who is right?

Ultimately the diarist needs to be judged on the effect of his writing. If you think that we're truly in a post-racial word then he still hasn't succeeded with you. If you feel uncomfortable with his writing he is having an effect. When you stop complaining about it and ask "How can I help blacks and other minorities get their voices heard as their voices and not what we tell them their voices should sound like" he will have succeeded.

          I'll meet in any middle.

I have my limits for how far I'll pursue any conversation, but I'm interested in constructive engagement.

You still don't get it. You're declaring where the middle is, what is acceptable, what the rules of engagement should be. And when those terms aren't met you call those that don't abide by them unreasonable.

So who has all the power in that arrangement?
