  •  i wanted to write about the bible (4.00)
Because so much of the discourse that got aimed around Schiavo's body was biblical in nature. I don't know how strict her upbringing was in terms of whether she read the bible regularly, but it planted these questions in my mind.

But yes, culture reinforces all those ugly things about our bodies. I was just speculating on the ultimate source.

    •  Have you ever read (none)
a book called Holy Anorexia? I remember reading it in college for a class, and it was about the religious/historial link to anorexia...basically it was the only control they had in such a patriarchal society.

There's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated...insensitivity is standard and faith is being fancied over reason.-NoFx

Another great one is Holy Feast, Holy Fast by Caroline Walker Bynum.
      •  Control issues (none)
That's what I have heard about why people become anorexic -- they are heavily under someone else's control, and they feel it's their one way to exert some control in their lives.

Given the Schindlers' attempts to control her in her helpless state, you have to wonder. Without assigning too much blame to them (they obviously cared about her and are suffering grievously), you do have to wonder how much they attempted to control her before she became anorexic.
