    the 60s.  Part of the back to the earth movement that saw hippies dropping out of what we saw as the commercialization of our society (little did we know what was to come!).  There was more to the movement than psychedelic posters and anti-war protests, and co-ops became very popular for a while.

    But yes, the country has long had co-op electric service, grain elevators, and credit unions.  But hearing the term just conjured up images of long hair and sandals.  Sorry.

      ... manages a rural electric co-op, buys about 95% of our groceries from a food co-op and grew up in the nation's oldest housing co-op. So there's a continuity to this for me....

        When I was a kid, my mother always shopped at a market simply called "The Co-op."  and it was one. For some reason it went out of business before I grew up and could use it as an adult.
        Now I do some of my shopping at our local health food co-op (I'd do more, but it's small and i can't get everything I need there). I'm a proud member of that co-op!

        If, in our efforts to win, we become as dishonest as our opponents on the right, we don't deserve to triumph.
