    is that the bridge has to give the illusion of going somewhere else, ie a different key, while in reality it is just going in circles to come back where it started.  That is why the recap bridge theme in pretty much all sonata movements is different and harmonically more interesting than the first time around.

    This was the first movement of the symphony I played, when I was in HS.  (We didn't do whole symphonies.)

      is often the most fun part of the movement, especially in some older works by Mozart or Haydn.  For instance, think of the recap bridge in the Mozart 40th first movement.  One of the coolest moments in the whole symphony.

      It's kind of hard to explain that to people without sounding too geeky, isn't it? Heh.

        I like bridge themes in general.  The first movement bridge in the Tschaikowsky Violin Concerto is one that I wait for, both times.  Go figure.  

        Though I must say that when I had to write a sonata movement, my bridge was pretty much the same both times - just resolved differently.
