Just because Obama's people would love to run against Newt doesn't mean it would work out for them. The well-known example is that Carter and his people wanted to run against Reagan. I do consider Romney more electable, but Newt would fire up the base more and he's also running a more positive campaign (which is odd for Newt). Gingrich has high negatives, but I think those could be brought down and if the economy is bad, Obama will remain in trouble.
If Romney gets the nod, he'll put Rubio on the ticket and that will help fire up the base.

    •  Rehashing Gingrich as Speaker would be a gift (5+ / 0-)

Gingrich was a hugely divisive figure and Obama would not have to use much effort to point that out to voters.

That's true, but Obama is a fairly divisive figure these days as well. The advantage he has over Newt is he's more personable, but that may not be enough if the economy remains in the toilet.

        •  Actually Obama isn't a divisive figure. (2+ / 0-)

His personal approval ratings are incredibly high. People may not like the job he's doing but they like Obama the person. That isn't the case with Newt. He has horrible personal approval ratings especially with women.
