Everyone who is loudly saying, "Wow, I would have called 911! I would have stopped that guy! Why didn't they!!!???" are just making themselves feel good about something they feel bad about...

This is a "postdiction" – the opposite of a prediction. Social psychologists know people’s predictions of what they would do in a given situation are notoriously unreliable. People completely underestimate how powerful those experiences are. There are powerful social pressures that come to bear.

But we know about this. It can be handled with training and creating new social pressures. If we train people, give people the clear message that they are expected to intervene and help them to understand the social pressures for complicity, we will be less likely to have these kinds of problems. We just need to do this instead of talking about something else. Action.

I've been attacked for being gay as well though it wasn't too serious. Serious enough though. A guy gunned his truck at a crosswalk making a "gesture" to run my bf and I over with his truck. It was very frightening but we weren't hurt. Still, you and I know how that can change how you see yourself in the world.

I'm sorry you feel beaten down. You have a great and important voice to add to all this here. Sing out loud! Sing out strong!
