  •  TV bible thumpers v True Crime shows (0+ / 0-)

I woke up to something quite atypical, foreign to me on TV: The Hour of Power, and mega church preacher Joel Osteen, preaching to a shitload of a flock. Looked like the whole city of Houston was there, which was where they gathered.

Joel Scott Osteen (born March 5, 1963)[2] is an American author, televangelist, and the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. His ministry reaches over seven million broadcast media viewers weekly in over 100 nations around the world.

He is mega wealthy from his vast flock, btw. Vast fortune.

Funny, then, this diary about how the true crime genre, as shown on TV, makes us angry or narcissistic, selfish, etc. I dont mind going against the grain here by saying I like watching such shows, like 48 Hours, etc... they give fascinating glimpses into dark areas of human psychology, relationships, law, the justice system, which are REAL. That they are told in a suspenseful way is okay by me - they lend themselves to such an device. You couldnt do the same with a cooking show and you dont tell a crime story like you would a pasta recipe.

Today, I too was struck by the what negatively impacts the psychology of many Americans, of something twisting the hearts of many Americans, but for me it wasnt true crime, it was the preaching of the gospel, as I saw and listened to the spectacle of the words of Preacher Joel, ever framed by a gentle and constant smile.

What I gathered from Preacher Joel was that the whole premise of how to live a happy life rests on being a good Christian and that means swallowing whole the idea that God is a really fucked up dude, but he holds the power, so better get with his demands. Although Osteen exalts this God what he said put me in mind of a demented, narcissistic/intensely vain, self-indulgent all-powerful string-puller/dictator, who will allow for all sorts of nastiness to rain down upon us, torture and destroy us, until we start stroking him, devoting our every thought to gushing over him, his greatness.

God's demand was made clear to me.

The spiel today was all about how we must PRAISE GOD when times are bad, horrendous even, when many feel most inclined to pray-complain, to beg for help, relief, change. "NO!," exhorts Preacher Joel. Instead, these are the very times one must PRAISE God, lavishly and often. Then HE will bestow his favors upon us, unleash his goodness, in the words of the preacher, "defeat all our foes."

    He said:

God is not moved by our problems, he is moved by our faith!

He said to praise god when youre going down the drain financially, like this:

God, business is slow, but you are providing for all of my needs. Praise. When you praise god it activates his power. Behind the scenes, God is getting it all lined up. It will eventually work out in your favor. [Never mind what wall street is doing to us - NYCee]

Houston, btw, is rated in the top 10 high-crime big cities. I guess the victims just werent praising God enough. (Rev Joel reminded us that Jonah got spit out of the belly of a whale by switching from complaining to praising, 9th verse!) Guess that's why a ministry like Osteen's can never be too mega. Although I dont know why it hasnt been effective as is - there were thousands upon thousands of attendees who were right on board with Rev Joel there in Houston.

As for True Crime, one might actually be helped by such shows or stories - by gaining an awareness of what's out there, the bad and the ugly in their various guises, and ways one might avoid becoming a victim of such bad actors. Sometimes one becomes a victim just from the bad luck of the bad draw, or a malevolence and deviousness that cannot be foreseen, but not always, and for some folks, it is, sadly, their cluelessness about the dark side of human nature, their denial, bad choices, poor prevention, inability to read the signs, etc, that gets them or their loved ones to end up as crime statistics.

Should a "progressive" Dem blog dwell in the safe zones of a lame party, or should it drive a lame party to break out? If it cant, should it break out?
