They are utterly resistant to evidence. They may be educated in the sense that they do well in school, but if you stack up one chunk of evidence upon another, they will deny the natural conclusion.

Their latest thing is that President Obama might have been born in the USA but he is not a "natural born citizen." It doesn't matter how much law you cite, they think there is some secret qualification that Obama doesn't meet.

Likewise, with climate change they have a series of denail arguments and when they are refuted one after another, they just start all over.

People believe what they hear on Fox and what they read in right-wing emails because they WANT to believe it. They want to believe that we can continue living the way we have been and that society can continue on this path indefinitely without major concerns. They don't like Obama's policies so they'll believe any crap repeated in the right-wing media. To these people, the only relevant facts are the ones that reinforce their favored beliefs. When the climate change story was one-sided, conservatives sort of accepted the possibility but searched for conservative remedies. When presented with arguments (true or not) from both sides, they picked the "facts" that they wanted to believe.

Does not work where the emotional assumptions and conclusions are stronger and more deeply rooted.

H'mm. I'm not terribly into this, anymore.
