  •  True, but... (7+ / 0-)

The oligarch's bag of tricks is well funded but their tools are few and blunt. Their machine is a huge bureaucratic mastodon that can't maneuver, change or adapt dynamically. Its inertia is titanic and its brain and control systems are atrophied by complacency and entitlement and grown sclerotic.  They have the mainstream media, the political processes and a lot of muscle but really not much else.  It could all fall apart for them quite suddenly if a strong consensus coalesces that rejects or circumvents those control mechanisms.

I don't think they understand the internet or know what to do about it.  They cannot effectively control what information flows frictionlessly through the lines of communication at near light speed. Ideas that find resonance can propagate and grow at exponential rates, change has never been more empowered in spite of the relentless flood of corporate propaganda over the channels they still control.  If the people begin to question the message, the money no longer has traction. Saturation will backfire. Cue cascade failure.

History says that even brutal dictatorships cannot indefinitely flaunt the will of their citizens.

Advisors for President-Elect Barack Obama feared the new administration would face a coup if it prosecuted Bush-era war crimes, according to a new report out this morning.
