  •  They still process to increase overdrafts (11+ / 0-)

Most banks are still processing to increase overdrafts, by paying your rent check first, then deducting the little checks or debits.  In the agreement you sign to get an account you agreed to 'ask' them to do this.  You agreed to never sue them, and just present your conflict to the mediation board they hired. There is probably a way to have an account and not agree to this, but it isn't easy.

Even if you don't support OWS and Move your Money, you need to get out of commercial banks.  For the next year or so they are going to be going nuts on new ways to charge fees, and you're not going to be able to keep up with what's going on.

On ThinkProgress (I think) I was reading an article about B of A and how they are now charging for balance inquiries at an ATM.  So you get to pay 50 cents or 75 cents to check your balance before you take out that $20.

Please check with your friends and relatives, esp. the elderly, and make sure they know what's going on with checking accounts now.  I fear many Grandmas and Grandpas are going to be hit with fees for things they've been doing forever.  I tried to explain this to my elderly Mom and got nowhere, so I'm going to have to get her accountant to go over things with her.

    •  Whenever I see a clause in a contract... (0+ / 0-)

Whenever I see a clause in a contract that i dislike, I draw a line through it and then sign it & return or hand it in. Then they sign it & give me my copy.

They never bother to read anything more than the my sig & date - so I've never had any problems doing this.
