  •  Lies seem to be FAR more powerful than Truth (7+ / 0-)

Marijuana remains ridiculously illegal, and why? because of a mountain of factual evidence corralled by a government that just cares SO MUCH about the quality of your meaningless lives?

    No!

Lies. The lies live on without a shred of proof, endlessly torn down, but they just reappear and people - even educated progressives and liberals - just sigh and let it go. Somehow it's just not important enough to correct.

With the GOP and hell, ANYTHING they do, it's lies perpetuated by THEIR media that live, even when the truth is frigging evident.

I spend a lot of ugly time at Yahoo News and these lies more or less control Wingnutland. They believe the LIES and are invariably skeptical about any media reports to the contrary, once they have their feel-good, out-of-touch-with-reality brainfart.

James OKeefe, Breitbart, Rove, Beck, Limbaiugh, O'Reilly et al ALL live by the big lie.

And oddly enough - LYING is protected free speech - they are allowed to lie constantly.

    And that's all they do.

passing gas is a protected right, too.  No matter what comes out of Rove, it smells foul.

Show me a politician that doesn't want to gain, and/or hold onto power, and I'll show you one who can't get elected.

    •  No it is not. (0+ / 0-)

There are significant limits on commercial free speech as compared to individual freedom of speech.  And the classic example of yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater when there is none is why these limitations exist.

Now that commercial free speech has been more fully invited into the political arena by citizens united, expect many of our side's lawyers to begin pressing for limits as to truthfulness.

You have a right to exaggerate (saying ten inches when the reality is far less), but not to blatantly lie.  Our prisons hold many white collar criminals who thought otherwise.

I seem to have suffered yet another attack of wellness.

when its only 12 ounces.  Commercially or otherwise, saying literal detail that can be demonstrably refuted is not exaggeration, it's lying.

If Rove sticks to callling people un-American, he has all the room in the world.  If he says they voted X on bill Y about Z and it just ain't so, well there should be penalties.
