We used white phosphorus (similar to napalm) in Fallujah.

    •  US can technically use WP (0+ / 0-)

Nasty stuff yes, but when it comes down to our Soliders vs Al Qaeda/Taliban/Jihadists... 95 of our brave Servicemen gave the ultimate sacrifice (and for what? but that is a whole other issue)

White Phosphorus is used to create smoke banks to cover troop movement. It is efficient for flushing threats out of buildings. And as you mentioned, it also is similar to Napalm.

The US has not signed the part of the GC that disallows WP use against enemies, so it was legal under US law. The circumstances have to be extreme for the military to use it. The circumstances in Fallujah were just that. A massive army of insurgents holed up.

I am not saying that the use was justified, just saying that the argument becomes much more difficult when one considers just how screwed up the situation was in Fallujah. I am not sure how I feel. I wish war didn't exist, but it does. Obviously, its not a weapon that should be used often.

My cousins both fought in Fallujah, it was not pretty. The problem was the US ignored the problem for so long that it just kept growing until it exploded. They found bomb making factories and beheading chambers all over the place when they finally took back the city. It was total anarchy. The situation should have never been allowed to reach that level. Not good.
