since equivalency is the weapon of those on the right.  For example, slavery existed in Africa for centuries before American slavery which is true but ignores that slavery in Africa was a different institution from American slavery and equates both as being the same, excusing the savagery of the American variety on the grounds that slavery, though not the same institution, existed in Africa.
As to Irish slaves, are you referring to after 1833?  Though it was supposedly outlawed in 1806 after Wilberforce's campaign. it was not universally outlawed in the Empire until 1833.
From online information:   http://wiki.answers.com/... and  http://afgen.com/... and  http://www.trisranch.com/... and http://www.raceandhistory.com/...
However, from the literature it appears the slaves were prisoners of war, political prisoners or religious prisoners.

"Exploitiation" doesn't begin to describe it.

sociopaths will be sociopaths. racism provides one excuse, but they've been plenty creative at finding other ones. europe has been an almost continual bloodbath for most of the last 1000 years. the crusades weren't motivated by a contempt for brown people as much as they were motivated by a desire to send the psychopathic warrior class off somewhere else, so they'd leave off working their atrocities at home.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
