a supposedly moderate region such as NoVA could elect clowns like Bob Marshall, Barbara Comstock, and this guy.

Southern Fairfax or Western PW county, both of which are more Republican and less moderate than the rest of the region (Comstock is a notable exception to this). I'm not a NOVA expert or anything, but I've always gotten the sense that Republicans in these areas are much more conservative than Republicans in the rest of the region.

The turnout model for our state and local stuff is just a lot worse for us than in federal cycles, 2010 an exception.  Our people are people of color and young whites......try convincing these people to show up for state legislative races, they just don't care.

Of course even my personal GOTV efforts with friends were only partly successful.  I got one of my best friends and his wife, both in McLean like me, to vote, but another couple in Arlington who are close friends and who I called personally, both on their cells, didn't show......and this even though the husband is a big political junkie and strong Democrat, and I figured a call the weekend before the election was enough.  And he's a white male.

Very tough to convince Democrats to vote, much tougher than Republicans.

That was the one meta-flaw in our redistricting, that we relied on Obama and other related numbers that didn't provide a good baseline for off-off-year cycles like 2011.
