  •  A quibble: (8+ / 0-)

There have been a ton of anarchists.  Anarchists are responsible for a great deal of what has been astounding about this movement.

There has been a tiny group black bloc kids, using a tactic that is a tremendous disservice to the movement.

    •  Is there a difference? (0+ / 0-)

Because I've seen 'black bloc' and anarchists used interchangably here.

I'm not one myself, though I've dabbled with anarcho-syndicalism.  Anarchists have a long and storied past.  Very important thinkers and activists.  They've contributed greatly to social movements, including this one.  One very important stream flowing into the non-hierarchical nature of OWS has been anarchist thought.

Black bloc is a tactic that is primarily associated with some European autonomists.  One can argue about its effectiveness -- it's a mixed bag.  For this particular movement at this particular time, it seems roundly counterproductive.

"Anarchist" is also pop-culture speak for "hoodlum."  That can really confuse the hell out of things, which is more or less the intent.  I've worked with a lot of anarchists over the years and find this definition to be as far off-mark as can be.
