    •  Lake Merritt operated as the city sewer until (0+ / 0-)

      the turn of the century.

      The history of Lake Merritt is really fascinating, Samuel Merritt owned much of the waterfront property and was responsible for building the dam and restricting tidal flow.  But he was also responsible for creating the nation's first wildlife refuge there in 1870.

      My office is one block from the lake on the North side.  I love it here.
