  •  He does make fun of right more than left (4+ / 0-)

But he still stretches to make fun of the left to appease critics who call him biased, and to do so seizes on incidents on the left that aren't funny.

Steven Colbert poked fun at OWS people, and it was actually funny. He poked fun of the things that actually lend themselves to ridicule, like the whole voting by finger wagging, drum circles, and the refusal to identify concrete positions.

But the segment on Stewart last night struggled to create an image of broad class segregation among OWS that really didn't seem all that supported even by most of the people they interviewed.

His segment on Solyndra as an example of an Obama scandal was also pathetically nonfunny and reeked of false equivalency.

If it IS a comedy show first, then he should stop inventing ways to ridicule the left that simply aren't funny and should instead focus on what is funny, whether it is left or right.

Or, when all else fails, he can do what he likes to do--resort to childish fart jokes and sounds.

I disagree with you that you can just as easily poke holes in his pieces criticizing the right. The right is replete with extreme absurdities, so it's very easy to find ones that make the ordinary person laugh. The left has them but in far smaller number, making them harder for his writers to sniff out.  And it shows.

    •  I can get behind most of that (5+ / 0-)

Like I said, the segment last night wasn't great (and Colbert's was definitely much better) and I do find it generally funnier when they make fun of the right more than when they go after the left (though, of course, we're all biased on that front on this site).

Still don't really agree with the last paragraph though... The fact is, most of their segments have manipulative editing, simplifying of more complex arguments, etc... It's just a lot easier to overlook those things when you agree with the main thrust of the piece.

      •  What left leaning show (4+ / 0-)

says as many inconsistent and ridiculous things as the morons on fox and friends? It is harder to find examples on the left because most on the left try to be accurate and honest even when it does not favor them, so you see fewer absurd and obvious inconsistencies. The right meanwhile, often engages in extreme verbal contortions to ensure that every situation they discuss favors a right leaning position. That is so much easier to poke fun of than people telling the truth, like Rachel or Keith or even Ed generally do.

And I think Jon's team too often does similar contortions to try to make it seem like the left does the same thing, but because they really don't, the segments fall flat.

By the same token, it is why the fight is so much harder for the left-- it is against our nature to tell blatant lies that we know are not supported by the facts just to score political points. The right's followers are so obsessed with government conspiracies and so filled with hatred for anything to the left of their extremism that they are more likely to trust what they are told if it comes from a rightwing source.

was so absolutely devastatingly hilarious that Orwell would have found it funny instead of sad. It was beyond a caricature of Animal Farm. It didn't seem real. But it was.
