  •  point of info - song credit: Florence Reese (0+ / 0-)

Thank you Senator Sanders for a great diary. I just wanted to mention that the song, while sometimes credited to Guthrie, actually appears to have been written by Florence Patton Reese.

Which Side Are You On - The Almanac Singers - In 1940, the Almanac Singers (Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Lee Hays, Sis Cunningham, and others) recorded a coal mining song called "Which Side Are You On?" It had been written nearly a decade earlier by an activist and songwriter in Harlan County, Kentucky, named Florence Reece, whose husband Sam was an organizer for the United Mine Workers. Sam would eventually die of black lung in the '70s, but by then his wife's song would have been used for the labor movement and adapted to the civil rights struggle.
