...police in our nation have got to stop thinking that they are facing some kind of terrorist activity and start realizing that these are peaceful protests.

When that happens OWS will be in demise as it's job will essentially be done. It will have won control of power.

And on that note I think OWS ought to making nice to the police. I have always said this. Without police a corporate congress is screwed. You might even see accountability on Wall Street crimes.

Yeah except in a time of real revolution, the police are usually one of the last groups to switch sides.

I'm not saying we should attack the police.  My take is we should not attack them nor should we be nice or polite to them either.  I'm the one at the actions who walks around and tells people "stop talking to the cops" when I see them trying to chit chat them up right after they have pepper sprayed us or rammed us with their bikes.

The police know how to use tactics on people they think are "sympathetic" by being friendly and joking but you can't guarantee they are digging for info not trying to make a new bff.

Books are trash. Corporations are people. Tents are terrorism. Pepper spray soon to be declared a vegetable.

      •  A protest is NOT the time to talk politics with (0+ / 0-)

cops. They have already shown up for work and have their orders.

The time to do it is at the local donut shop when they can be a citizen because it is the citizen that has the power to change.

People can talk to police in a non-confrontational situation and have some expectation that it is a conversation not an interrogation.   But doing it before, during, or after a confrontation in some attempt to humanize yourself to the police just doesn't work.  I've seen dozens of people try and it is just awful.  "Hey, you are part of the 99%"   "I bet you have kids!  Don't you care about their future?"  FACEPALM.

I've even had people yell in my face because we were chanting "cops go home" when we were surrounded in our occupation.  "Stop telling them to leave they are doing their job!!"

I kid you not.  lol   I have the worst attitude about police now, and part of it is because I have to keep fighting with people who don't think I should be angry when they are brutalizing and harassing me and my fellow occupiers.   I'm angry!!!  It doesn't mean I am going to get violent but I'm not going to smile and flirt with the damn cops either.

          •  I still would not be angry at the cop (0+ / 0-)

I would not get distracted from fighting for what is right. If I fight with the cop it makes his job easier as he can demonize me and I will have changed the object of my ire who will have therefore won. There is an art to making the moral choice obvious and it is not at all easy. It is so innate in humans to engage raw primal emotion and start a race to the bottom. Non violence is extremely hard to pull off but nothing worthwhile is easy.

Better to smile nicely and apologetically as you make his life hell. You, after all, are only doing YOUR job which is, in fact, to make his as impossible as possible.

No need to discuss it but one of you is going to lose and at least he gets a pay check either way.

    •  This is so close to Kent State that everyone needs (6+ / 0-)

to speak out. The police will only escalate and escalate unless they are called out.
