  •  I define "competent" as able to do (0+ / 0-)

something useful.  All Newt is able to do is persuade people via bribes or threats to do for him.  I don't consider manipulation an accomplishment.

Self-directed people are competent.  Instinct-driven individuals aren't. Instinct is fine for birds and bees.  It's not sufficient for organisms that rely on developing brains.

Newt, I would argue, accumulates lots of information in his memory bank.  However, the ability to process that information seems stunted, at best.  Perhaps that deficit is connected to whatever the reason was for him being adopted. Brain damage is often subtle and not readily obvious.

    •  Sorry to be so long, but... (0+ / 0-)

you can't make up your own definitions of words...

      From Dictionary.com:
      com·pe·tent   [kom-pi-tuhnt]  Show IPA
      adjective
      1.
having suitable or sufficient skill, knowledge, experience, etc., for some purpose; properly qualified: He is perfectly competent to manage the bank branch.
      2.
      adequate but not exceptional.

Of course, I accept that your personal definition does clarify your intent and agree on that.  However, I would say he's useless, worthless, devious, malicious, and evil.

Newt is not a creature of instinct.  In fact, he is highly intelligent and does process that load of info quite well.  It's just that his purposes are his own.  He is using that skill, knowledge, and experience in order to further his personal station, status and wealth.  And he does it quite well.

This man lies competently.  He says what he needs to say no matter how outrageous, no matter how bald-faced and does it well enough to keep the media panting over his "seriousness", impeach a sitting president and tarnish the dem brand for decades, stick around long enough to have two opportunities for a shot at the nomination, earn 30k an hour for "advice", etc. etc.

Yes, he's a scum bucket.  But so are many, many others in our government and the eco-system it supports, in business big and small, and just about anywhere power can be taken and used for selfish purposes.

My issue is that dems (and not necessarily you, personally) too often seem to be surprised or at least act surprised or even "shocked" when a right-winger does something so outrageous and gets away with it while taking shots at someone else who's doing the same thing or when they suddenly (or conveniently) realize that they're not negotiating in good faith.

They are doing it on purpose!  And they're good at it.

Would we be so happy to have a military that dwarfs all others combined if it was a line item deduction on our paychecks next to FICA."
