  •  No. I couldn't. (9+ / 0-)

In no way could I 'make a strong case that such jobs mess up kids worse than working at fast food joint.'

If you can, then do it. Otherwise, you're full of crap.

But I don't know anyone who's had any issues from working at a fast food joint, no matter the age. Do you want a list of child actors/performers who have had issues? I'm surprised this would take anyone any effort to realize.

i think one of the reasons why child actors and such wind up with problems is because work at that age is inherently exploitative -- they can't make their own decisions, so they're made for by other people, including whether to pursue fame.  It's a case for, not against child labor laws.  But the exception is there because some jobs adults can't do, not like sewing with little fingers, but jobs like "playing Annie."

        •  One other factor (0+ / 0-)

Entertainment is a very big money industry (hmm...maybe that's why the laws are different $$$$$$$$).

Money corrupts anybody.  Put kids into the mix, who are suddenly making tons of money (and since they're minors, it's usually the parents that are taking that tons of money), and it gets 100 times worse.

          •  I know some friends with child actors (0+ / 0-)

One of them is the little Japanese boy in the latest iPad commercials.  While his mum is the one that takes him to his auditions and such (as well as his older sister), the kids themselves apparently love and enjoy the work because it's still all a giant game of "let's pretend" to them.
