    states, all you need is "depraved indifference" for first/second degree murder.  The standard example is putting on a blindfold and repeatedly firing a gun into a crowd.  If someone dies, it is still murder even though the gunman had no specific intent to kill or even hit anything.

    There is no saving throw against stupid.

      yes you do need specific intent for first degree murder. You may not need it for lesser degrees of murder. The only real exception that qualifies as first degree murder is felony murder, but you have to be committing a felony at the time, usually a fairly serious one.
