So far, a few years in to our experience, buying programmable thermostats has made a huge difference. We heat/cool by where we are, not wasting it in unoccupied parts of the house. That, and we hang up our clothes to dry. I don't say we never use the dryer but we keep our usage way down. In a seriously hot summer, our bills were in the 40-50 dollar a month range for a 3000 square ft. house in North Carolina.
We use passive solar, too, warming rooms with the sunlight.

We have a rack with wheels on it that we hang our clothes on most of the time. No carrying of baskets, and it humidifies the air in the winter. It really cut our propane usage down a lot. With the prices having gone up so much on propane, it really has made a difference.
