    Early network adapters had a feature called "Wake On LAN" which would rouse a computer from sleep state whenever another computer on its network tried to access it. It's possible that this is what's happening here.

      Since most motherboards have built-in ethernet ports, that feature has been moved to the BIOS.

      You can go into your BIOS and shut that off... though messing around in the BIOS is not for the faint of heart!
