    War, Revolution and armed conflict.

    In the pre-TV days there were so many newspapers that they actually had to COMPETE with each other and actually CARED about selling papers in order to stay in business and attract advertising.

    It was known that wars sold papers. One hypothosis as to why the US got into WWI was because the media whipped the public into such a frenzy about the conflict (before US joined in)  as a means to sell papers.
