For some reason, Americans are in love with the percent sign today. The 1%, III%, 47%, 53%, 99%.   I’m sure there must be a statistic somewhere that shows a fraction of Americans, let’s say one-third, doesn’t know that 50% is the same thing as a half.  (That was a bit of numbers nerd humor.)
A week ago in all of the discussion about the UC Davis pepper spray attack, I was surprised that the right wing was uniformly hostile to the student protestors’ First Amendment freedoms. I was nauseated when I heard our self-proclaimed patriots expressing legalistic ideas about where and when the Constitution applies.  The Boston Tea Party, the real one in the 1770’s, was an act of civil disobedience.  Do they even teach Thoreau in school anymore?  The right wing doesn’t need conscience and principles.  They have  the Second Amendment.  Until that one is effectively repealed, too.  What gets me riled about the far right, the III%, the religious extremists, and the others labeled conservative, is the absence of real ideals and principles.  It’s only their personal freedoms that count.  That seems like a flaw in their philosophy that they should know because tyranny divides and conquers.  One day university students, another day Georgia rednecks. The percentage sign is two circles with a line in between that keeps them apart.
