  •  The real problem (5+ / 0-)

is precisely the reverse: the unity government deal would move Hamas further away from being a terrorist organisation, and hence make it more difficult for Israel to justify its rejectionism.

    •  What will Bibi do to hold on to power? (4+ / 0-)

Christy1947 links to an article about how Bibi could lose power as his party shifts to the right.  And she recently linked, I think, to an article about how if either of two settlements were razed, someone had threatened to leave the coalition and bring down Bibi's government.

So, even though Bibi's been rattling his saber as loudly as he can, he appears to be in danger of losing a significant amount of power, unless he can shore up support.

Bibi's a pretty loose cannon already. I can't (alas) be certain, but I'm inclined to think that he won't attack Iran, because it looks like the military is against it. The logisitics are formidable, and the likely blowback terrifying.

What else could Bibi do that looks so strong and nationalistic, it would convince his fanatical right-wing to step in line behind him?  All I can see is, smack Hamas and Gaza or grab more of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. And he's already doing the latter.

      heathlander? Christy1947? Anyone?

because the US doesn't want it to.

He is under pressure from his right flank and we can expect that to be reflected in the coalition's policies. Indeed perhaps we already see it in the hysterical response to renewed (but still fragile) Hamas-Fatah cooperation and, as you say, in accelerated settlement expansion. Beyond that it's not clear, although bear in mind that he has other pressures on him too (in the case of the PA, for example, the military and the US government both appear to be strongly against allowing it to collapse).
