  •  That is profound, what you jsut said: (27+ / 0-)
When the abuser has to actually punish, the power has fled

as apparently that is where we are now.

It is becoming clear the austerity/deficit-reducing while trillion-dollar war-making/social security and medicare/medicaid-cutting emperors have no clothes. Thus the punishment of late.

Holding on to hope/remaining engaged for next step.

    •  the power to punish is still power (5+ / 0-)

It's not the 1%'s ideal, but if they can only lord over a Fourth World sh!thole filled to the brim with angry peasants who would tear them to pieces if they ever got past the bulletproof cars and armed compounds, they'll settle for it.

Just think of all the opportunities for resource-intensive fuss that a society like that would make necessary and the high visibility of the 1% that would result. Imagine a society where every billionaire gets a big loud motorcade and where your security guards can beat anyone who so much as touches your car. Imagine a society where every billionaire gets to live in a fortress: a potent display of wealth and power as well as a decadent enclave utterly remote from the world outside its gates.  Imagine a society where all restraints on the exercise of power are lifted, and there's no longer any need to hide your indulgences from the public eye.

These people really do want to go back to the Middle Ages.

Do you know why they call it the American Dream? Because it only happens when you're asleep.

I hear what you are saying.  I do.  But....

Call me naive, but I still think that deep down many of these billionaires really don't want to live in a society that you describe.  They ARE human.  Really.  And I believe human beings are innately GOOD, thus there is always hope and in fact without any hope that the "power-elite" types will ever change, things indeed are dire seeming.  But what if we HAD hope that they too could change?  Wow!  What a concept.... to at least entertain?  Please?

Many of them are very sick, sociopathic etc.  And addicted to their money and lifestyle.  And mean-hearted, yes.  At the very least, they are totally brainwashed true-believer types.  And at the worst end, are folks like Cheney who you have to suspect know exactly what evil doings they are up to.

But even THOSE folks are still human and they are living in fear and self-hatred is eating them up.  I still think we need to aim for educating/healing the "power-elite" with compassion, since that is the only thing that will heal them.  It is the only thing that heals US from our addictions, and guess what?  We all have addictions.  We all have our dark side, and we all hurt other people and ourselves, even if it is just with thoughts and words.  So where do we draw the line of distinction?  How are "they" all that different than us?  Do we not perpetuate the problem and give them giant-sized power when we imagine they will never change, they are SO POWERFUL LIKE A MONSTER UNDER THE BED, OH NO!  But, wait, if they are just like us, maybe they are approachable.  Maybe!

I hope we can imagine a world that is NOT like what you describe, and I hope that we can have faith in ALL people, even those we find ourselves despising.  (And believe me, I find myself doing that all the time!  But in my heart I somehow keep thinking:  "these evil fucks are so hurting, so damaged, so sick and in need of help... can't that be our attitude towards them?  What would happen if we tried that approach?)

Is it not worth a try?  Would it not EMPOWER people to get more active in healing the world if we actually had an optimistic view of the future, instead of a dreary one where it is assumed that those with all the money/power will "never change".  Hmmmm.  Do we really know that that is true?  That they will never change?  Can we know the future of humanity?  Are we not creating it, as we speak?

Just my thoughts.... for what they are worth.
