  •  The problem with the retirement system is (8+ / 0-)

    that the money you've paid into Social Security does not transfer over, and your ability to draw based on what you've paid in is substantially diminished (at best). It's an artificial and substantial barrier to switching in or out of a teaching career.

    •  My sister says when she retires, she will have to (10+ / 0-)

      move back to the state where she grew up as she is afraid she will not be able to afford to retire in the town and state where she has lived and worked as a teacher for close to 30 years. The cost of living is cheaper here.

      So, that is going to be another big move that follows retirement. And she is not alone, many teachers, teachers aides, school secretaries, school nurses and more retire and then have to move out of that area to be able to afford to retire.

      Of course, this applies to a lot of retirees in this day and age.
