I realize that it used to be that way - but remember that are armed services are also made up of women... many of them serving in combat roles that are not in 'official' combat areas.

The original point still stands - teachers should be thanked as much as soldiers are. But that thank you should be much more than just words. The best thanks we can give those in both professions are decent salaries and benefits and dignified retirements if they spend their career in public service.

    •  Actually no - to your first para. (0+ / 0-)

Just like not all teachers are female. But teaching is feminine and combat is masculine by nature. By feminine I mean  care-giving, co-operative sort of while by masculine I mean competitive.  Not to say combat is never needed or always bad. Self-defense is where it is utmost needed.

I read Chomsky's and some other works on how our military adventures are mainly about maintaining the profits for corporations. It is opening up new markets, exploiting cheap labor, resource extraction etc. "The tragedy of American diplomacy" by William Appleman William comes to mind.  John Perkins in his "confessions of an economic hitman" documents how the military takes over if the economic hitmen (at IMF, World bank)  fail to trap countries into cash cows for Western corporations. I think teachers not serving the capitalist profit motives is another reason the profession is not so respected by TPTB. Veterans for peace actually made  a statement recently something like the wars are all about serving the 1%.
