    I can definitely see sexism being a part of it. There may be a perception that teachers, especially of younger children, are mommies as much as they are teachers and it would be very unseemly for “mommy” to complain about pay.

    To some degree though, I think all public sector employees are in the same boat. The basic bargain of a public sector job is supposed to be that you get a lower salary, better benefits and better intangibles, e.g.: more job stability. Of course, the way things are going, public employees still have the lower salary but are losing the other things that make the job worth it. Likewise, teachers are losing what is probably one of the most important intangibles: a modicum of public respect for the work they do.
