  •  There already was a crisis (0+ / 0-)

    with visiting outsiders.

When I lived in Tuscaloosa there was a visiting theater troop who had come to our state to put on a number of performances for special populations. They performed at prisons and mental institutions all around the country. This was in about 1974.

They were integrated with males and females, black, white and brown. About 4 of them and one of our group hosting them went for breakfast and on their way back they were stopped by the police for ??? walking while integrated in downtown Tuscaloosa. The cops were more than rude and not quite brutal and hustled the males off to jail! Our person and the female member were let go and came back with this almost unbelievable tale.

We phoned the police station and were brushed off. Then we called the state's cultural department boss and told them of this. He called and got nowhere. They were being held for resisting the police and acting suspiciously. (read uppity and asking questions.)

So he got on to Governor Wallace and told him we had a bit of a problem. If they had to call off that night's performance it would be a very public disaster. And every minute was making it worse. Can you imagine what a fracas disappointing an audience of over 500 people who were  committed to a mental institution might be?

So Governor Wallace had to call the police station and read them the riot act

Some really shook up men rejoined us. We eventually all laughed about it and that night the show went on — with some raucous participation from the audience.

So much for cultural ambassadors to Alabama.

I'm asking you to believe. Not in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... *I'm asking you to believe in yours.* Barack Obama
