The funding is administered by the USAC and every dollar of funding comes from private companies.

Assurance Wireless is brought to you by Virgin Mobile USA and is a Lifeline Assistance program supported by the Universal Service Fund. Lifeline Assistance is only available on one phone line per household. Assurance Wireless is available in limited geographic areas and is subject to the Assurance Wireless Terms of Service.

The right wing likes to smear Obama with this program by calling them "Obama Phones"... which is a lie.

    •  One of the links said it was a federal program. (2+ / 0-)

I read them. I could go back and look; but, the lifeline program has been around since, long before Obama. It gives land line owners discounts on their phone costs. I've had it for years, And since I never use a phone, but need one. I'm getting the cell phone for sure! i don't care who's giving it. I'm taking it. I earned it, as with any other govt programs. I and my family paid many times over in taxes whatever I might get from social security, food stamps, etc!
