  •  Glad to see the photo co-op up and running... (31+ / 0-)

...It's going to be a great year for photos.

I hope Kossacks who attend meetings of politicians, protests, events like the opening of green-friendly centers, campaign stops, etc., will take the time to snap some photos and upload a few of the best ones to the co-op's site for everyone's use. Even if your photo is of an obscure state legislator, it's worth posting. You never know when the guy is going to introduce head-bursting bills that will gain national attention (for good or ill) or make a racist comment deserving our opprobrium.

Thanks, Sven, for all your hard work.

    •  very good point, MB (12+ / 0-)

We still have a lot of galleries to fill, and I'm thinking that the 2012 campaign season will provide a wealth of photo ops from all around the country for current and future contributors.

For those who'd like to contribute, here's how: email dkphotocoop at gmail dot com and include your DK user name as well as the name you'd like to have on your watermark. Your watermark name could be your DK user name, your real name, or your relevant photo web site. We will then create your watermark and email you the manual containing login info and everything you need to know about uploading your photos.

Indicates that you need permission to post a Dkos Photo Coop photo on sites other than Dkos. Is that true if it's your own photo?

        •  that's a good question (4+ / 0-)

I'd say since the spirit of that rule is to prevent photos from getting misused you should probably be able to post your own pic wherever you like, as long as it's relevant to the mission of Daily Kos.

"as long as it's relevant to the mission of Daily Kos."
            Would you please clarify.
If it is my image, am I relinquishing some of my rights to that image, if I post it to the Co-Op? If not, what does the mission of DK have to do with it?

we're trying to avoid anyone's photo being used on, say,  redstate, for a purpose that you wouldn't like. So this is our way of protecting everyone's work from being misused. So basically, it's okay to use these images on Daily Kos without permission. For any other site, you have to ask permission first. If it's a progressive site, chances are we'll give permission, but we still want people to ask first.

I understand the first part regarding protection, but let me give you an example.
I posted many of my shots of fish, shrimp & other marine creatures here on DK, showing what the world stood to lose as a result of the catastrophic oil spill in the gulf. I posted my images on a regular basis once a week in a Gulf diary.
I also post these images on reef sites in which I hold membership.
These other sites are not in any way politically oriented, but if I posted some of these images in the Co-Op, I would have to ask permission to post them elsewhere, if I understand you correctly.
I wouldn`t mind posting some of my images to the Co-Op but feel an imposition or burden when having to ask for permission to reuse them elsewhere, unless (and I just thought of this) I wasn`t posting them from the Co-Op bank, but from my own personal archives.
Did I just answer my own question?

                  a) of course you can post any of your photos from any other photo host site, like flickr or photobucket, wherever you want. They're your photos. In fact I do it all the time with mine. I have over 1000 photos on flickr for all kinds of occasions, but I wouldn't want to impose all of them on the DK Photo Co-op, because it's really meant as a collaborative effort with people only posting a handful of pics in each gallery to allow for a good mix and not clog up the site with repetitive work.

                  b) since it's your own photo, you're pretty much welcome to post it wherever, since obviously you wouldn't post it in a way that would go against your own POV, which I'm assuming is progressive in a general sense.

The spirit of the rule is pretty much to protect contributors as well as the DK Photo Co-op name from any nasty surprises and abuse, and we choose to err on the side of caution, just to make sure nobody becomes misrepresented without their consent.

                    Thank you for your attention.
I see how much work you put into organizing this Co-Op.
Thank you for that also, & for the introduction to my future confusion. (kidding)
I shall be emailing for details soon.
I also use flickr, but I`d submit only a select few out of over 8,600 I have there.
