  •  shorter Decter: "feminism is only for rich women" (1+ / 0-)

Midge Decter is not only writing but acting out an ideal that's far older and more general than feminism and squares perfectly with her neoconservative leanings.

Neocon anti-feminism is a specific case of a more general principle: the idea that intellectual pursuits and self-realization are only appropriate for the leisured rich, while the peasants need to concern themselves with work.  As a wealthy person of leisure, Decter is not only free to think and write and organize her life around politics, philosophy, and being all she can be, but it's her duty as a member of the ruling class to do so

On the other had, poor women don't have the capacity to do any of that, and even if they did, it's not their place.  Their job is breeding workers and soldiers and providing those workers and soldiers with food, sexual release, and a dedicated ego masseuse/punching bag so they don't rebel against the philosopher-kings.

It's not hypocritical of her at all, because her entire worldview is based on double standards.

Do you know why they call it the American Dream? Because it only happens when you're asleep.

    •  Was Decter always from a privileged background? (0+ / 0-)

I'd love more information on just how she went from relatively sane to raving, angry lunatic.

      •  background probably same as hippies (0+ / 0-)

Vietnam-generation radicals from well-to-do families.  They turned right when they believed that the Left had dropped the ball on saving the world.  They were pretty orthodox Marxist-Leninists who believed that the Revolution must be violent and thus rejected the Left's embrace of pacifism.  They also viewed identity politics as threatening to divide the working class and smother the Revolution in its crib.  Many of them are Jewish and were alienated by the Left's embrace of the Palestinian cause.  Leo Strauss' ideal of a philosopher elite molding kings as well as peasants even mirrored the Bolshevik model of a small and fanatical revolutionary vanguard.  Disillusionment with the Soviet Union eventually discredited the entire socialist/communist project, and when it finally collapsed, that seemed to be the end of it.

Eventually they completely repudiated their revolutionary beliefs and professed liberal democracy and capitalism to be the more effective means to human freedom and material welfare.  The Reagan-era Right seemed to be a more capable vehicle than the Left: it was willing to use military force, it claimed to reject identity politics, was in bed with Israel, and of course never missed an opportunity to sing the praises of democracy and capitalism.
