    not to mention Dwight Eisenhower.  The Republican Party has reversed polarity in the past century.  Google McKinley especially and you'll see how much.

      that did it!  I'm old enough to remember when the Southern delegations at the Republican National Convention were integrated (but predominantly black) and the ones to the Democratic National Convention were all-white.  Things started changing in 1964, and it didn't take long for that to completely reverse itself.

      Some of my Republican friends are fond of pointing out that the 1964 Civil Rights Act got a higher percentage of votes from Republicans than from Democrats, but if you look only at the Senators and Representatives from outside the old Confederacy, those percentages were reversed -- and the people who supported the segregationist Southern Democrats who opposed it are now the base of the Republican Party.
