  •  Melting Permafrost Releases Methane (5+ / 0-)

You now have a self reinforcing cycle - it's only going to get worse.  Warming Arctic releases methane which causes
    MORE warming......

The one possible 'good' offset is that a warmer North Atlantic may dump colder water from melting glaciers in Greenland into the ocean which shuts down the Gulf Stream (we've already seen a measurable slowing in the flow over the past 50 years).  Without the Gulf Stream you have an abrupt COOLING of the North Atlantic....... the Earth has its own feedback system which we can't control...

Of course no Gulf Stream makes Northern Europe and the British Isles MUCH less livable - and may make some places almost uninhabitable (at least at current levels).   Iceland really DOES become ICEland.

Life isn't fair but you should try to leave it fairer than you found it.

major warming, so we can't expect a cooling of N. Europe to offset the total trend.

The jury's out on the quick re-cooling we had at the end of the last ice age that was around the time all the N American megafauna and the clovis culture died off. There's growing evidence the cooling might've been the result of an impact.
