  •  egyptian officials cite US mistreatment (3+ / 0-)

of occupiers as justifying their own brutality against egyptian protesters.

obama's lack of denounciation of mistreatment of peaceful protesters gives that much weight to egyptian lies that mistreatment of people is something the US actually sanctions!

we give lip service to fair and just treatment, if it's not our country.

    •  No actually it was the protestors (0+ / 0-)

...who took solace out of president Obama's "Cairo speech" rised up which was a starting point of unraveling Mubarak's rein.

Egypt's people especially the younger generation know who to blame, and it is not president Obama.

Your efforts to lame this obviously very deep running pile of shit on the President of the United States is not going to work.

On the contrary, after — to cite just one example — the U.S. reaction (which was to reaffirm both parties' 110% support for Israel) to Israel's attack on the Gaza relief flotilla, I don't think ordinary Egyptians had many illusions left about anyone with real power in Washington being on their side.

        really?

egyptians themselves do not make this argument.

the organizers of the revolution point to the intifada and to a general strike that was brutally put down as events that galvanized the movement. the seeds of the movement were planted even before obama became a public figure.

quote from noted egyptian activist who had been jailed and tortured by the regime:

        hossam el-hamalawy:

Revolutions don't happen out of the blue. It's not because of Tunisia yesterday that we have one in Egypt mechanically the next day. You can't isolate these protests from the last four years of labour strikes in Egypt, or from international events such as the al-Aqsa intifada and the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The outbreak of the al-Aqsa intifada was especially important because in the 1980s-90s, street activism had been effectively shut down by the government as part of the fight against Islamist insurgents. It only continued to exist inside university campuses or party headquarters. But when the 2000 intifada erupted and Al Jazeera started airing images of it, it inspired our youth to take to the streets, in the same way we've been inspired by Tunisia today.

      •  please explain the double standard (0+ / 0-)

as to why obama would denounce the brutality visited upon egyptian protesters but not denounce the violence visited upon by american protesters?

See my comment below about a protest in Miami — U.S. law enforcement has been headed this way and setting this kind of example for a long time.
