    efficient form of transportation is by water.

    It's too bad that this readily understood fact is not appreciated, but it's not surprising at all that it isn't if one looks around these days.

    The real issue however is public ignorance and public short sightedness.

      Let's say you can build a boat with the same cargo capacity as an 18-wheeler for the same price.  In the time it takes that boat to go from Eugene to Portland, a truck can make 6 round-trips. Truck drivers earn a fraction of what a skilled river boat pilot commands.   Which would you invest in for your shipping company?

      I'm not saying water transport doesn't make sense, it's still in use where it's economically viable.  There are huge barges plying the Columbia every day.  But it doesn't scale down compared to the alternatives, at today's fuel prices.
