  •  Don't assume Newt's baggage is widely known (15+ / 0-)

Republican insiders know that Newt won't stand up to the scrutiny of a presidential race, though he might win the nomination. Newt is getting a free pass from low information voters and senior voters, who are simply ignorant. For establishment figures who know only too well about Gingrich they see him as simply unelectable.

    •  I agree (6+ / 0-)

Most Tea Party folks probably know Newt as the guy who makes those religious videos and led something called the Republican Revolution. There's plenty of dirt people can use a refresher on. Newt in infinitely flawed. The only question is whether those flaws will get attention before it's too late for Mitt.

too.  The Washington Post even ran a recent article attempting to mitigate the story of Newt's first divorce.  Aspects of Gingrich divorce story distorted.  On an inside page.  This was after they ran front-page articles featuring scandals involving Cain and Perry.

The powers that be seem interested in promoting Gingrich's candidacy.  Why?

The influence of the [executive] has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished.

...he's got a lifetime, irrevocable membership in the "club".

We're resigned to our collective fate because we've been conditioned and brainwashed to believe that this is as good as it gets. It's not.

I admit to watching Fox News probably as much as I watch CNN throughout the day.  One thing that is very vivid about Fox News is that they have really been on the Romney train.  And, they haven't been all that favorable toward Gingrich, however they're starting to put more favorables out there for him now.

My point is that I don't think Newt is going to get the media backing and free-campaign bennies that Mitt would have gotten had he stayed on top of the GOP heap (and, yeah, I think Newt's gonna be the guy).

    •  I'm not sure about that as well. (0+ / 0-)

I've forgotten a whole bunch of stuff that is now coming up about when he was speaker, and the entire Newt Inc. is just now coming to light.

My wife says I couldn't have done it. And leave my wife out of this.

      •  The thing about Newt Inc (0+ / 0-)

...was that it began while he was Speaker. The same one who originally accepted a $4.5 million book advance from Harper Collins before backing away due to the deluge of criticism.

And that is just one example among legion.

    •  Senior voters remember the 1990's shutdown. (1+ / 0-)

While that seems tame by modern Republican standards it left a really bad taste in people's mouths for Gingrich.

He's going to have to overcome that.  Good luck.

The seniors of today remember the good times of the Clinton years.  it was always knows that time would be kind to Bill Clinton, and it has been.  it was accelerated by the GWB presidency, and bringing Gingrich back on the scene will only bring the positives of the Clinton years and the negatives of the GOP congress during those years.

If Obama wanted to have fun, with victory certain, he could unleash Clinton nationwide just to screw with the hardcore GOPers.

        •  My Republican parents (0+ / 0-)

think the economic boom of the Clinton years was BECAUSE of the GOP congress at the time!  I kid you not!

They said it was Newt and his crew that made the Clinton years so good.   WTH

          •  Well it can be argued many different ways (0+ / 0-)

Personally its hard not to have a boom when oil prices were as low as they were.  Secondly, with a relatively gridlocked government, there was certainty for a while.

In those 2 regards, I give each of the parties 0% credit and 100% credit, respectively.

..and winning back the House for the first time in 40 years.

All the dysfunction then is nothing compared to today so republican voters will give him a free pass.
