    usually allows for legal sanctions, civil or criminal. Of course, their effectiveness depends on many factors, but the possibility is there.

    If, on the other hand, the law forbids homosexuality, you're screwed both ways: By people who hate you and by the law. In fact, the former profit from the latter: A landlord won't just be able to terminate your contract, he will be able to denounce you to the authorities and the sanctions tend to be unpleasant (lashes, death...).
