  •  The people living in those tents ASK me for them. (0+ / 0-)

They are all adults.  They certainly know the risks.  Denying them a cigarette isn't going to help them continue their occupation or force them to quit smoking.

Many of these folks are trying to get by on "roll your own" cigs and free paper matches.  A commercially-rolled cigarette with a filter is a highly prized commodity there.  When I'm on-site and light one up, usually no fewer than three people will ask me for one.  I take an extra pack with me to ensure that I have enough to give away a bunch.

Certainly the mix of people will vary from site to site and the number of smokers, vegans, veterans, "older" folks (like me), and pet owners (Occ. Pgh. has 2 pooches living on-site) will differ from place to place.  You non-smokers aren't being asked to light these up yourselves, just to provide a few decent cigarettes to the occupiers who do smoke and are there so you don't have to be there in their place.

Smokers are people/occupiers, too.  Kindness takes many forms.

Struggle with dignity against injustice. IS there anything more honorable that a person can do?
