some employers paid for training for employees to learn new technology. Is that still done anywhere, or do they hire new people and pay them lower salaries?

what they do, people who got professional degrees have been cut for people with less education at a lower cost.  That is what they are doing to unionized teachers now, most of the less well known professions took a hit starting years ago.

It started with giving new employees less benefits and grandfathering older employees, and now that we are getting to the rock bottom of benefits they are undercutting the "real," jobs.
