It is, fundamentally, about the right of women to decide what is best for them.

It seems that some of that "christianity" training in your youth has rubbed off....your post comes across as wanting to punish, which is basic in almost every organized religion.  The problem when you apply that to pregnancy, is the child suffers as much as, if not more, than the woman who must be punished.

Taking religion completely out of the picture, the social impacts of unplanned children are blatant across our society, with poverty being at the top of the list.

something, I am not proud of by the way. I think the root of the problem for me is that I see morality, safety and responsibility as all one thing, and didn't express myself very well either. If you know about conservative religious backgrounds, that would make more sense to you, if you don't, that makes no sense.  Thank you for your insight.

guilt, shame and punishment.  I've come to realize that shame and guilt cover up many more sins than they prevent.  I have also been counseling pregnant girls and women for 30 years now (uniquely qualified to do so as I have experienced all the "options" for an unplanned pregnancy) and believe more firmly than ever that a woman should never, ever be forced to give birth.  My hope is more people will come to realize that and we will begin to break the cycle of women as (still) second-class citizens forced to bear the brunt of unprotected sex at every level.

If and when the wingnuts start putting forth harsh laws for the sperm-donors of these babies to make THEM take responsibility for their actions, I may take them more seriously.
