  •  It is political. Election season. A President (20+ / 0-)

that promised to put science before politics does exactly opposite.  The first administration ever to overturn a FDA recommendation.  The FDA used actual science to reach their decision.  Spin away.

    •  Science? the study was done by drug manufacturer (0+ / 0-)

according to this post. FDA has withdrawn numbers of drugs that were initially approved by such "actual science"; i.e., the manufacturers' claims.

I've had decades of personal experience with the effects of hormonal drugs, particularly the initial claims of benefit by manufacturers and doctors only to have those claimed benefits later refuted or counterbalanced by unhealthy side effects. My conclusion: most people, including doctors, are much too cavalier about the long term effects of massive doses of hormones.

Are some adolescents likely to take higher doses than recommended because Plan B is available OTC? Certainly.

I don't believe this is a political decision; I believe it is a difficult matter to balance health risks and reproductive rights.

The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. -FDR
