It happens long before that point, often to draw attention so that legal and political efforts can have a better chance at succeeding.

But it seems people get motivated to protest when society has miserably failed them. That is what pushes enough people to assemble and demonstrate.

The harsh economic realities will continue to get people out in the streets to stand against the economic injustice.

But you make a good point. Often its a matter of principle.

    •  I tend to agree with ZhenRen. (3+ / 0-)

After all, the whole point of occupying space in the #Occupy movement is that we have to occupy precisely because the system has been co-opted by Wall Street and the 1%. Same with all the emphasis within the movement on direct action.

This is our time. We can do this. We can change the world.

until people have tried straight-up political and legal recourse first.

I mean, people don't just say to themselves:  I've got a problem with my Congressman--I think I'll lay down in front of traffic with a sign saying "Stop Funding that Goddamned War."

They usually call the Congressman, petition him, visit his office, write him letters, hold small (or large!) rallies, etc etc.
Sometimes put on ad get the jist.

It's rare that people don't try all those options first--or all of them that they can afford--before putting themselves in harm's way/potentially pissing off the cops.

Being ignored is the difference between being a one percenter and an American.--sweeper
