of the mid to late seventies.

The pinnacle of which may have been
the Saturday Night Fever film soundtrack.

Before this era, when people went out clubbing,
there almost always were live musicians performing.
A lot of folks lost their meager livelihoods due to such
normal and ofttimes desirable cultural shifts. Much
like the technological advance that made silent films
into 'talkies' early in the last century. The price of progress?

It led to the ascendancy of DJs, and scratch, and beat
mixers, rap, and hip hop, with their myriad permutations,
that continues to this day. Do not forget that Asian DIY
import kissin cousin', Karaoke, emerging only a bit later.

Our present economic disparities do seem
      like an awfully disproportionate retribution
for such a harmless diversion, especially
on the young, who weren't around to enjoy it,
or the old, who despised it then, like any new trend.

Interesting story concerning the lingering malice
among the elder glitterati for something so long ago.

Thankfully, it did set the stage for the punk ethos...lol

Thanks for all of your efforts.

what I didn't like about disco was the fashion and the attitude. It's always been my experience that people who exert so much effort and invest so much money into displaying how cool they are usually aren't cool at all.

That being said, some of the music I so disliked then I have come to enjoy now. For instance, Average White Band had/has some ferocious jazz licks that, in my youth, I was unable to discern amid the cacophony which was my view of disco back in the day. Now, AWB shares my iPod with Steely Dan, Miles Davis, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, The Tedeschi Trucks Band... I have only a few megahertz left of my measly 8 gigs, so I'll leave off there.

IMO, Disco still sucks, but it doesn't suck with the extreme suckiness with which it sucked before it "died". Taste mellows with age.

The Right beats its chest over the symbols of America, while the Left works to sustain her substance.

is, but I couldn't quite make the connection from the subject of the diary to "Disco". I am sorry, I read, err scan diaries and comments, while doing something else at work and therefore often just "don't get it". I really should stop sneaking to the "dailykos" window, while working in at least five other ones. :-( /

Very sorry for having you caused to write up such thorough and kind response.

      •  Speaking Of Karaoke.... (0+ / 0-)

Did you know that "Karaoke" is Japanese for "that bitch can't carry a tune in a friggin' bucket"?

Karaoke is the combination of people whpo shouldn't be singing with people who shouldn't be drinking.

Actually, in all seriousness, the word "karaoke" translates out of Japanese as "empty orchestra."

And there is you KOOK factoid for today.
